Spelling
At Hartpury, we feel strongly about supporting children to be brave spellers. We understand the importance of children learning to spell correctly but we also want to engage and inspire children with a love of words. This is why we have implemented the Spelling Shed approach to spelling which puts the children's love of words at the heart of learning to spell.
This means that classes will no longer have weekly spelling lists to bring home, practise and be tested on. Instead, the children will have discrete spelling lessons which encourage them to look deeply at words, draw and build upon their knowledge of phonics from KS1 and make connections with spellings or letter patterns that they may already know.
This approach involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols, as well as using morphology to help spell through meaning. Carefully selected word lists are focussed upon each week in lessons, as well as children having access to their own EdShed account to revisit these spellings through fun, engaging games at home.
