PSHE
At Hartpury C of E Primary School, we aim to develop children who are motivated and equipped to be courageous advocates for our world, throughout their lives. We seek to develop each child’s understanding, respect, appreciation and responsibility for the world around us, so they can make a difference both now and in the future. The Global Sustainable Development Goals are central to our ethos and our Christian Values underpin all aspects of our community as we strive for the children to develop a broad understanding and enjoyment of the world that enables them to be outward looking, resilient and effective citizens of the future.
Statement of Curriculum Intent
PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide the children at Hartpury with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community, preparing them for opportunities and responsibilities in the future.
Statement of Curriculum Implementation
At Hartpury, we deliver the PSHE curriculum by utilising first-hand experience and sharing good practice; it is every staff member’s responsibility to do this by being a role model and having high expectations of Hartpury pupils. All staff should actively promote growth mindset and ‘gem powers’, and celebrate these with the children.
The PSHE curriculum is delivered through the SCARF scheme. SCARF stands for: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship
This will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:
- Have a sense of purpose
- Value self and others
- Form relationships
- Make and act on informed decisions
- Communicate effectively and work with others
- Respond to challenge
- Be an active partner in their own learning
- Be active citizens within the local community
- Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
- Become healthy and fulfilled individuals
Part of the SCARF approach is the practice of mindfulness exercises with the children. These sessions enable children to relax the body as well as calm/quieten the mind. This improves their capacity to learn and develops inner resilience.
SCARF covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase, as the following table shows:
Autumn 1 |
Me and My Relationships |
Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters |
Autumn 2 |
Valuing Difference |
Includes anti-bullying and diversity work |
Spring 1 |
Keeping Myself Safe |
Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices (on and off line) |
Spring 2 |

Summer 1 |

At Hartpury, we believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught weekly; although there will also be opportunity to make cross-curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of the PSHE scheme of work. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class.
PSHE is an important part of collective worship where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. Here is a link to the PSHE and RHSE policy.
Statement of Curriculum Impact
We want our children to become positive, confident citizens in a forever-changing society, showing awareness and respect for others and themselves.
