Shine From the Inside Out

Art

At Hartpury C of E Primary School, we aim to develop children who are motivated and equipped to be courageous advocates for our world, throughout their lives. We seek to develop each child’s understanding, respect, appreciation and responsibility for the world around us, so they can make a difference both now and in the future. The Global Sustainable Development Goals are central to our ethos and our Christian Values underpin all aspects of our community as we strive for the children to develop a broad understanding and enjoyment of the world that enables them to be outward looking, resilient and effective citizens of the future.

Statement of Curriculum Intent

At Hartpury C of E School we intend to engage, inspire and challenge all children’s creativity and develop their talents. By acquiring key knowledge and achieving mastery of key skills and techniques we will provide them with opportunities to experiment and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should become more critical in their understanding of art and design in addition to appreciating how both contribute our history and culture.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Statement of Curriculum Implementation

In the Early Years, teaching topics are formulated based on the children’s interests. These topics are designed to give opportunities for children to experience and develop interest in art and design. The Kapow EYFS scheme of work, will be followed in the Autumn term 2022. In years 1 to 6, the National Curriculum forms the starting point for our planning and provision where Art and Design Technology are taught alternatively, each mini term, following Kapow Primary Scheme over a two year plan. This scheme provides: complete National Curriculum coverage, progressive scheme of work for Years 1-6, teacher and pupil demonstration videos, 130+ lesson plans easily adaptable to other topics (with discrete teaching of the formal elements of art and design skills such as line, shape, tone, texture, patterns and colour) and assessment resources for each unit.

Lessons are taught weekly unless timetabled projects are required to teach a block of lessons consecutively. Where possible units will have links to topics, calendar events such as Christmas or Outdoor Education. There are a number of enhancements to the curriculum. Children at Hartpury have the opportunity to develop their passion for art and design when taking part in Arts Week activities and workshops with local artists.

Statement of Curriculum Impact

Art and Design is a practical and valuable subject. Teaching and learning in art and design supports the children’s growth in many areas of personal development: well-being, confidence and aspiration. Opportunities are planned for promoting a love of art through self-expression, celebrating achievements, understanding the impact of art personally and in world around them.
