Physical Education
At Hartpury C of E Primary School, we aim to develop children who are motivated and equipped to be courageous advocates for our world, throughout their lives. We seek to develop each child’s understanding, respect, appreciation and responsibility for the world around us, so they can make a difference both now and in the future. The Global Sustainable Development Goals are central to our ethos and our Christian Values underpin all aspects of our community as we strive for the children to develop a broad understanding and enjoyment of the world that enables them to be outward looking, resilient and effective citizens of the future.
Statement of Intent
Hartpury C of E Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education, whilst giving them a platform to develop life skills in tandem. We aim to teach all children the skills needed to keep them safe, such as being able to swim. Our purpose is to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play through our embedded life-long Christian values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Hartpury C of E Primary School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that Physical Education promotes.
Statement of Implementation
- Physical Education at Hartpury C of E Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: Invasion Games, Net and Wall Games, Striking and Fielding Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming and Outdoor Adventure.
- The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- We use external coaching from Progressive Sports to help ensure a number of our P.E lessons throughout the school year are delivered at a high standard from a qualified sports coach.
- Pupils at Hartpury C of E participate in one high quality PE lesson each week, covering one sporting discipline/subject each term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in a varied range of extracurricular activities. Lunch Time sports clubs are available as well as after school sports clubs, which are delivered by Progressive Sports.
- We are regularly invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These team events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
- We also use Progressive Sports within after school clubs. These clubs focus on sports which are not so common such as Archery, Dodgeball, Tchoukball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Fencing, therefore enabling children to try something new.
- All children throughout the school complete the Daily Mile around the school playground and field with their class teacher at various times through the week.
- KS2 Children, during the Spring term, go swimming once a week in order to develop their swimming and water safety skills.
As a school we have strong links with Hartpury College / University. This means that throughout the school year pupils visit the Hartpury campus for coaching and outdoor education lessons. Teachers and students also visit the school regularly and provide coaching for pupils and after school clubs.
Statement of Impact
At Hartpury C of E Primary School, through engaging and effective lessons, we help to motivate children towards participation within a variety of diverse sporting opportunities. Children take responsibility for their own health and fitness journey and enjoy competitive sporting occasions. Our PE lessons provide children with a platform for personal growth and cement within children the understanding of how sustained sport and exercise is linked to long-term health and wellbeing. Through PE and competitive sporting scenarios, all Hartpury C of E pupils develop their understanding of our Christian values and as a result, develop life-long interpersonal skills.
